Now that school is almost over it’s time to look at summer vacation plans! If you live in Charlotte you may be looking for weekend getaways close to the Queen City. However you may be new to the area and looking for some ideas. Gatlinburg and Myrtle Beach are a couple excellent options for day trips:
Day Trips to Gatlinburg
Gastlinburg, Tennessee: Gatlinburg is about a 4 hour drive from Charlotte making it an ideal mountain summer vacation getaway. It is in the Smoky Mountains and has many beautiful hiking trails. Many of its trails lead to waterfalls and beautiful vistas. There are 150 trails for all levels of hikers. Other vistas are an easy drive away, perfect for a picnic. A very nice option if you aren’t up for the longer hikes. Other options are biking, whitewater rafting and in the winter skiing.
You also can rent a mountain cabin if you plan on staying for a week.
There are other attractions for families as well outside of outdoor activities. Downtown Gatlinburg offers a Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies for instance and many high quality restaurants. Here is a new favorite we found on a recent trip:
Day Trips to Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Myrtle Beach is about a 4 hour drive from Charlotte. So if you’re more into laying on the beach than hiking the mountains this is the destination for you! There are plenty of other activities. If you’re into water activities how about river tours or jet ski and boat rentals?
Besides the beach and waves, Myrtle Beach offers attractions such as the Medieval Times, Carolina Improv, and Brookgreen Gardens. Beautiful Brookgreen Gardens includes art exhibits, pontoon tours and restaurants.
